Confession is important because:
It keeps us humble. The prayer of Confession calls to mind the true nature of our relationship with God. We are not able to be good by ourselves. We constantly need His help and forgiveness. God does not love us because we are good, but because He is good. He does not forgive us on account of what we have done for Him, but on account of what He has done for us.
It keeps us from being judgmental. If we are constantly remembering our own sins in confession, we do not have much room to worry about what others have done. The Bible assures us that the wages of a single sin is death (Rom 3:23) There is no degrees of sin in God’s eyes. Were are all condemned the same. Confession eliminates any grounds for feeling superior or proud.
It helps us overcome our faults and shortcomings. By remembering our sins, we are also remembering to work on our sins. Perfection in this life is not possible, but improvement always is. Confession enables us to become closer to what God intended us to be.
It enables us to self-forgive. 1 John 1:9 reminds us that confession leads to cleansing. If we accept God’s promise as true, then God forgives us, whether we confess a specific sin or not. We cannot possibly know all the sins we have committed in ignorance or carelessness. But confessing those sins opens them up for self-examination. We bring them out into the open, so that we can know that the blood of Jesus can cleanse them. Then, if God has already forgiven, how can we continue to hold a grudge against ourselves?
Confession should be a regular part of our daily life, right after praise and thanksgiving. Confession is a daily spiritual bath, regularly cleansing us as we come into God’s Holy Presence. It is an absolute necessity for drawing closer to Him. Just as the priest of the old temple purified themselves by bathing and by sacrificings as the entered into the Holy Place in the temple, so we purify ourselves by confession as we enter into the holy place of prayer.
There are many ways of confessing to God, but some things must be true. Confession, must e sincere, specific, completely honest, and without exduse. Only then may we experience the forgiveness and cleansing God wants us to receive.
Take moment now, and confess your sins to God.

“ Most merciful God,
we confess that we have sinned against thee
in thought, word, and deed,
by what we have done,
and by what we have left undone.
We have not loved thee with our whole heart;
we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.
We are truly sorry and we earnestly repent.
For the sake of thy Son Jesus Christ,
have mercy on us and forgive us;
that we may delight in thy will,
and walk in thy ways,
to the glory of thy Name. Amen.”
