Every song tells a story—whether it a lament for unrequited love, an invitation to dance, a patriotic anthem, or an opera—all music tells a story.
Most songs do not tell a whole story, but that does nto mean there is no story behind them. Songs either anticipate something that is coming, celebrate something that is, or narrate something that has already occurred.
Hymns are sacred songs which tell a part of God’s story: celebrating what God does, anticipating what He will do, or narrating His past works. For this reason, the songs of the faith are particularly useful for praising the Lord.
Songs have one big advantage over other kinds of sacred communication. They touch the heart, not just the head. Music expresses the emotions of our lives, not just the events. When we hear a song we know, is stirs in us the memories of what He has done for us in many other trying times in our lives.
“Your Word I have hidden in my heart,” the Psalmist says, “That I may not sin against You.” Hiding an idea in our heart means to memorize it. A song or poem is easier to remember than almost anything else. It is our way of keeping God close.
Praise songs are songs which celebrate the attributes of God. They remind us of His power, authority, majesty, beauty and love. Singing or reading songs can be a valuable part of the time we spend with Him.
Today, try praising God by singing or reading aloud one of these songs
O Worship the King (Midi)
O worship the King, all glorious above,
O gratefully sing His power and His love;
Our Shield and Defender, the Ancient of Days,
Pavilioned in splendor, and girded with praise.
O tell of His might, O sing of His grace,
Whose robe is the light, Whose canopy space,
His chariots of wrath the deep thunderclouds form,
And dark is His path on the wings of the storm.
Frail children of dust, and feeble as frail,
In Thee do we trust, nor find Thee to fail;
Thy mercies how tender, how firm to the end,
Our Maker, Defender, Redeemer, and Friend.
Holy Holy Holy (midi)
Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!
Early in the morning our song shall rise to Thee;
Holy, holy, holy, merciful and mighty!
God in three Persons, blessed Trinity!
Holy, holy, holy! All the saints adore Thee,
Casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea;
Cherubim and seraphim falling down before Thee,
Who was, and is, and evermore shall be.
Holy, holy, holy! though the darkness hide Thee,
Though the eye of sinful man Thy glory may not see;
Only Thou art holy; there is none beside Thee,
Perfect in power, in love, and purity.
Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!
All Thy works shall praise Thy Name, in earth, and sky, and sea;
Holy, holy, holy; merciful and mighty!
God in three Persons, blessed Trinity!
Or, look up one of these psalms
